Back at Halftime

This chapter on spiritual gifts closes with a snapshot about joy and work, two things originally intended to go together. In 2009, when I arrived at Halftime, I inherited directors who loved the Lord like no team I’d ever seen. More than once I saw them cry over the ministry. Whatever they were asked to do, they did, which is good, but to a point.

Lloyd Reeb, a gifted speaker, writer, and coach, at one time was asked to be president of Halftime, which he’d say would be a disaster. A strategy guy, a thought leader, is made for specific things. Greg Murtha, phenomenal with the strength of woo, also had been president. Another misfire. Seeing this devoted team too often at odds with their gifts, I asked each person, “What brings you joy?” Lloyd’s joys were speaking, writing, and coaching. Greg’s was talking to people about Halftime. Jeff Spadafora’s was coaching. My joy was to get these people functioning in their joy, and that meant some repositioning.

In Christ’s name, all ministry is noble and good. But not every good thing has your name on it.
